Turtle Ranger Program

Ecosystem Bumi joins forces with Ecosystem Impact and the local government to protect the highly threatened Leatherback Sea Turtles and Green Sea Turtles on Bangkaru Island, part of the Sumatra Islands, Indonesia.

Ecosystem Impact’s mission is to save turtles and other species from the brink of extinction, contribute to more resilient ecosystems, and develop opportunities for the local community to benefit through their involvement.

Our aim with this collaboration is to protect the turtles and eggs from poaching, collect important data, and information on turtle nest & hatching success as well educate the local community about the turtle conservation. This will contribute to the crucial sea turtles population.

Why is it important?

Bangkaru Island, located off the northwest coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, is a sanctuary for some of the world's most endangered turtles and is one of the largest nesting sites for Green- & Leatherback Sea Turtles. Despite its wild and remote nature, the island is facing threats from poachers, plastic pollution, and much more. Through the Bangkaru Ranger Program Ecosystem Bumi supports 2 rangers to protect the turtles as they are a crucial part of marine biodiversity. Their presence helps maintain the balance of the marine ecosystem, and their decline could have cascading effects on other species and the overall health of the ocean.

Without the rangers, many of the turtles that lay eggs on the island 365 nights a year, with an estimated 200,000 hatchlings, could be wiped out by poachers. Monitoring their populations and health can provide valuable data on the state of marine ecosystems, helping us to understand broader environmental changes and impacts.

Rangers Activities
  • Conduct patrols during morning and night shifts to protect turtles and their nests from poachers as well collect important data. Every patrol will be done by two (2) rangers.

  • Tracking turtle nests with the GPS and SMART App, writing down GPS location, counting the eggs, measuring the length of sea turtle carapace and baby turtles carapace, taking photos of the turtles nesting, recording data of nests poached by predators, and beach clean up in every morning.

  • Report and respond when direct or urgent action is needed on site (sea turtle poaching, entanglement, trapped, or casualties).
