Javan Rhino Ecosystem Restoration Program
Ecosystem Bumi, a dedicated environmental organization, is strengthening conservation efforts to protect the critically endangered Javan Rhino. In partnership with Yayasan Badak Indonesia (YABI) and Unjung Kulon National Park, we are proud to launch the Ecosystem Restoration Program in the Javan Rhino Study and Conservation Area (JRSCA), located in Ujung Kulon National Park.
YABI, founded in 1993, is a leading force in rhino conservation in Indonesia, working tirelessly to protect both the Javan and Sumatran Rhinos. Together with local communities, government bodies, and global partners, YABI focuses on safeguarding rhino populations and preserving their fragile habitats.
Through this collaboration, our goal is to restore essential food sources for the Javan Rhino by planting 1,000 trees and enhancing the ecosystem in the JRSCA.

Why is it important?
In Ujung Kulon National Park, the last stronghold of the Javan Rhino, a significant threat is emerging the invasive Arenga palm (Langkap). This fast-spreading plant competes with native vegetation, including the plants critical to the rhino's diet. The dense canopy of the Arenga palm blocks sunlight, suffocating the natural habitat and leaving the rhinos with fewer food options.
As major herbivores, Javan Rhinos consume up to 50 kilograms of plant material daily, playing a key role in maintaining the forest ecosystem by promoting plant diversity and helping the forest store carbon and produce oxygen.
Swift action is essential. YABI and Ujung Kulon National Park are working tirelessly to remove the invasive Arenga palm, ensuring it does not overtake the rhino's vital feeding areas. By restoring their natural habitat, controlling the spread of the Arenga palm, and ensuring the availability of their native food plants, we can help secure a future for these majestic creatures.
Nursery Area
As part of our Ecosystem Restoration Program, we have established a nursery to prepare key food plants favored by the Javan Rhino before they are planted in their habitat. Currently, we have around 1,400 seedlings across several species, including Sulangkar (Leea sambucina), Kedondong (Spondias pinnata), Ki Tanah (Zanthoxylum rhetsa), Ciciap (Ficus septica), Bisoro (Ficus hispida), and Cente (Lantana cemara). You can also support our nursery to help ensure a sustainable food supply for the Javan Rhino.
