Guided by this year’s Earth Day theme, “Our People, Our Power”, the event highlighted the vital role of mangroves in supporting climate resilience. Mangroves play a crucial role in protecting coastlines from storm surges, providing habitats for countless species, and storing large amounts of carbon. This event aimed to inspire action and remind us that restoring nature begins with the choices we make as individuals and as a community.

In Bali, environmental actions are deeply connected to cultural and spiritual values. Before the planting began, a sacred ceremony was held to honor the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which means “three causes of well-being: Harmony with God (Parahyangan), Harmony among people (Pawongan), and Harmony with nature (Palemahan). The purpose of this ritual is to seek permission from nature spirits, ensuring safety, and showing respect to the sacredness of the land and sea, the belief that humans are not separate from nature, but part of it, and must live in harmony with all beings.

Participants also attended an educational session led by a local guide who shared knowledge about mangrove ecosystems and proper planting techniques. To get to the mangrove planting site, we needed to use canoes. This journey added a special sense of adventure and connection to the natural surroundings.

A total of 50 participants took part in the event, including university professors, students, and volunteers. Together we planted 100 mangrove seedlings (Rhizophora species) for a resilient future.
