Coral Restoration Program
Ecosystem Bumi, an organization dedicated to protecting ecosystems, is expanding its efforts to safeguard marine ecosystems. In collaboration with Livingseas Foundation, we are launching a coral restoration program in Padang Bai, Bali.
The Livingseas Foundation has been working on coral restoration projects in Padang Bai since 2019, aiming to rebuild a 5-hectare coral reef in the area. Their goal is to raise awareness of the critical importance of coral reefs and achieve long-term, sustainable impacts for future generations.
Through this collaboration, we aim to restore the marine ecosystem by planting 100 reef stars (1,800 corals) within a year and creating a nursery site to nurture the growth of young corals.

Why is it important?
Padang Bai is renowned as one of Bali's beautiful underwater destinations, known for its rich marine biodiversity and vibrant coral reefs, which are essential for the local ecosystem and tourism. However, the area faces significant threats, including rapid tourism development, destructive fishing practices, overfishing, pollution, and climate change. These challenges make Padang Bai an ideal candidate for restoration efforts.
If the ecosystem in Padang Bai is not restored, it could lead to the loss of marine biodiversity, a decline in fish populations, reduced tourism, increased coastal vulnerability, disruption of essential ecosystem services, and accelerated climate change impacts. These consequences would harm both the environment and the local communities that depend on it. Through this collaborative project, we aim to restore and protect the marine ecosystem effectively.
Program Activities
Coral Nursery:
As part of our restoration efforts, we have established a coral nursery where baby corals are carefully nurtured in a controlled environment until they are strong enough to be transplanted onto the reef. Our goal is to grow healthy, resilient corals that will play a vital role in restoring Padang Bai's reefs. You can support our efforts by adopting a coral and helping us expand the nursery!
Reef Stars:
In collaboration with Livingseas, we use the MARRS Reef Star structure, a highly effective method for coral restoration. Reef stars are hexagonal steel structures coated with resin and sand, designed to hold up to 18 coral fragments each. Their modular design allows for flexible placement, significantly boosting the success of our restoration efforts.
With a Reef Star Adoption, You Will Receive:
A coral adoption certificate
A personalized bamboo tag
Photos and videos of the reef stars
A 6-month progress report of the reef stars
